South African Karaoke Night in Toronto

What it is

THE JOLL is a South African karaoke night in Toronto, built for the Saffa community here. It happens once a year, and it is a proper night out: the songs you grew up on, great people, and a few hours that feel a lot like home.

Come for the songbook. Stay for the friends you did not expect to make.

Bring your voice, bring your mates, and bring the person you have been meaning to introduce to everyone.

How the night runs

• 7:00 PMDoors open. Drinks, hellos, and working out who knows who.
• 8:00 PMKaraoke kicks off. Forty five minute rounds with dance breaks built in between.
• 10:00 PMThe last hour is a proper dance floor. I am on the decks.
• 11:00 PMDone and dusted. Home at a decent hour, which is half the fun.

One Saturday night a year, in Toronto. The songbook runs from the sixties through the 2010s, with plenty of Afropop and Afrikaans in the mix.

Networking, but make it fun

Toronto is full of South Africans who would get on brilliantly if they ever ended up in the same room. This is that room.

You meet people over a shared mic and a song everyone knows the words to. Expect big laughs, easy conversation, and the kind of connections that happen all on their own when everyone is having a good time.

If a great business connection comes out of it, brilliant. If you just have one of the best nights out you have had in ages, that is brilliant too.

THE JOLL happens once a year, so this is the one to be in the room for. I am finding out how many Saffas want it before I book anything, so putting your name down genuinely helps make it happen. You will be the first to hear once the date and venue are locked in.
